The building, an old rural farmhouse from the late 18th century, was classified as a national monument in 1949, restored and turned into a museum in 1987.

Luigi Pirandello (1867-1936) was a Sicilian writer, playwright and poet, a central figure of modern Italian literature. His work explores identity, the fragmentation of the self and the relativity of reality. Among his novels translated into French are The Late Mattia Pascal and The Old and the Young, as well as a vast collection of short stories gathered in Short Stories for a Year. His theatre, with plays such as Six Characters in Search of an Author, profoundly transformed the European stage. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1934 for his body of work.

Inside, the exhibition rooms preserve manuscripts, photographs, original editions with dedications, as well as personal objects and posters related to Pirandello’s works, making the house a major documentary and memorial centre for the author. Access is via the mine galleries, located nearly sixty metres below the surface, about thirty metres below sea level.

Fitted out by miners around the year 2000, the cathedral occupies a vast corridor about twenty metres wide, eight metres high and a hundred metres long. It could hold up to eight hundred people. All of the interior elements — walls, altar, ambo, baptistery, seats and liturgical objects — were carved from salt. Several bas-reliefs can be seen there, including a representation of Saint Barbara in the apse and a crucifix, along with carved stoups.
The site also features a remarkable natural phenomenon: a “rose window” formed by the concentric crystallisation of salt and other minerals, visible deeper down.
Every 4 December, a mass is celebrated in honour of Saint Barbara, patron saint of miners. Visits are possible only by reservation, in small groups and with mandatory safety equipment, as the mine continues its extraction activity.
