Dominating the town of Cefal\u00f9, the Norman cathedral<\/strong>, built in the 12th century by Roger II<\/strong>, is a masterpiece of medieval architecture, one of the finest works of Arab-Norman architecture in Sicily<\/strong>. It is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a testament to Arab, Norman and Byzantine influences.
Its imposing fa\u00e7ade flanked by two fortified towers contrasts with the richness of the Byzantine mosaics inside, where a Christ Pantocrator of remarkable finesse reigns supreme.<\/p>\n

According to tradition, the construction of the cathedral basilica was decided by Roger II<\/strong>, who had made a vow to the Holy Saviour to express his gratitude after escaping a violent storm at sea. During that storm, he eventually ran aground on the beach of Cefal\u00f9, where he found refuge.
However, military motivations seem more tangible, given the topography of the site, which gives it the character of a natural fortress, protected by ancient megalithic walls. Moreover, the extraordinary size of the basilica itself serves a defensive function.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Cefal\u00f9 Cathedral<\/p><\/div>\n

Ancient remains have recently been found beneath the building, indicating the presence of an earlier place of worship, such as a polychrome Early Christian mosaic from the 6th century.
The first stone of the basilica was laid on the day of Pentecost in 1131, and the splendid Byzantine mosaics of the apse were created in 1145. Construction was intermittent. Thus the fa\u00e7ade was completed in 1240 and a new consecration was celebrated in 1267.
In 1472, a portico by Ambrogio da Como was added between the two towers of the fa\u00e7ade.<\/p>\n

King Roger<\/strong> had intended it to house his burial, as well as those of his wife and descendants. But these tombs were later moved to Palermo by Frederick II.
It is clear that the workers and architects were largely of Arab culture, as was the case for most of the architectural masterpieces of Palermo from the same period. In particular, the appearance of a palace-fortress, typical of Maghrebi architecture, is found there.<\/p>\n
