It is perched on a small plateau at over 553 metres above sea level, with nearly 13,000 inhabitants (which makes it a small town). It is above all an agricultural centre, with significant production of wheat, almonds, olives and artichokes, as well as livestock farming.
The historic centre is quite rich and interesting, for the majestic remains of its medieval fortress and for its remarkable Baroque buildings and churches. It stood at the crossroads of ancient Greco-Roman roads: from Agrigento to Catania and from Halesa (Tusa) to Gela.
An interesting stop off the beaten track.

The village’s heritage

The architecture and urban development of Mazzarino grew mainly in the Baroque era in the 17th and 18th centuries under the impetus of local lords. Several major buildings bear witness to this period of prosperity, as does the erection of twenty-five churches, as well as palaces intended for the local nobility and monasteries.
The historic centre of Mazzarino is organised along the long urban axis of Corso Vittorio Emanuele, linking several squares and monumental buildings.
The religious heritage is abundant: churches, convents, chapels of various religious orders (Jesuits, Carmelites, Capuchins, Dominicans).

Mazzarino Castle

Historical elements

The site of Mazzarino was occupied from the time of the Sicani, then under Roman, Byzantine, Arab and Norman rule.
Around 1143, the territory was entrusted to Manfredi del Vasto, a Norman lord, who undertook to reshape the town.
In the 17th-18th centuries, under the impetus of the Carafa-Branciforti family (principality of Butera and county of Mazzarino), the village was enriched with Baroque buildings, becoming a local political and cultural centre.
The 1693 earthquake, which affected eastern Sicily, led to the reconstruction of many churches in Mazzarino in the late Baroque style.

Main buildings of Mazzarino

Mazzarino Castle

The Mazzarino Castle (known as “U Cannuni”) is the most evocative building in the village, perched with its large cylindrical tower on a knoll away from the centre.
Of Roman-Byzantine origin, it underwent many alterations over the centuries, consolidated under the Arabs and reshaped after the Norman conquest, then transformed. Formaggio

10 km from Mazzarino, Monte Formaggio is a sandstone relief rising to 639 m, whose conical shape is the result of strong wind erosion. The surroundings, with meadows and scrubland of dwarf palms, have been partly reforested with eucalyptus. The flora notably includes endemic orchids. It is a natural viewpoint.

Grassuliato Castle

On a steep hill in the middle of nowhere in the countryside of Mazzarino, at 418 m above sea level, the ruins of Grassuliato Castle (also called Garsiliato or Castellazzo) is one of the fascinating medieval sites, although a large part of the walls have disappeared.
The remains visible today, fragments of towers, cisterns and walls with pointed arches, suggest a vast structure on several levels.
Its name could come from arx Saliatum, evoking an ancient fortification linked to a cult of Mars, or from an Arabic adaptation of the name. Traces of occupation from the Middle Bronze Age to the Roman-Byzantine period have been found there.
The first historical mention dates back to 1091, citing a Salomon de Garsiliat. It was a leading Norman fortress, damaged around 1162, during a revolt against William I of Sicily. The estate was granted to Bartolomeo da Amalfi in 1999, then mentioned as a knight’s fief in 1274. The lordship passed during the 14th century to the Branciforte family, lords of Mazzarino among others. From the 16th century onward, the fortress lost its military function.

<figure class="wp-block-gallery columns-3 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-4 is-layout-flex
