This stretch of coastline in southern Sicily, west of Agrigento and east of Sciacca, is one of the island’s most beautiful coastlines, benefiting from the protected area of the Torre Salsa Nature Reserve.

Torre Salsa Nature Reserve

The Torre Salsa Nature Reserve extends along the coast between Siculiana Marina and Eraclea Minoa over about 6 kilometres of beach and covers nearly 762 hectares. The landscape alternates between chalk and clay cliffs, sand dunes and wetlands, with dense Mediterranean scrub dotted with pines and species typical of the local flora. A few trails provide access to deserted beaches with crystal-clear waters, offering a particularly unspoilt setting.

Perched on a small promontory, the Torre Salsa, a watchtower built in the 16th century as part of the defensive systems against pirate raids, dominates the coastline. The reserve is also home to remarkable biodiversity, with animal species such as various migratory birds and birds of prey, as well as the loggerhead sea turtle Caretta caretta, which uses the beaches to lay its eggs. The seabed is rich and clear, appreciated for swimming and snorkelling.

Access is generally via dirt roads; there are no facilities (no bar, no shops) and no lifeguard services. About 15 kilometres from Siculiana, Bovo Marina is a secondary entry point to the reserve, with its maritime pines and picturesque coast.

Eraclea Minoa and Capo Bianco

To the west of the reserve, Eraclea Minoa stands out as one of the ancient Greek cities founded in the 6th century BC, in an exceptional setting on a cliff overlooking the coast.
The archaeological site (very modest in terms of the remains brought to light), perched on the white promontory of Capo Bianco, offers a view of the sea and the mouth of the Platani river. There you can discover the remains of a theatre, walls, ancient dwellings and tombs, as well as a small museum that preserves amphorae, ceramics and objects of daily life and funerary use.

The cliff of Capo Bianco, made of limestone sediments of marine origin, plunges into the sea, creating a spectacular panorama that precedes the Platani river mouth nature reserve.

The beach of Eraclea Minoa, at the foot of the ancient Greek city, is beautiful and long, bordered by fine golden sand and pines, with some services and facilities, while remaining moderately busy.
