Traditions and gastronomy in Zafferana

Honey and Etna wine

Zafferana Etnea is renowned for its honey, produced from the wild flowers of the Etna slopes. This honey is sweet, aromatic and available in several varieties, each with its own characteristics depending on the flowers foraged by the bees.

The vineyards of Zafferana Etnea produce quality wines, including reds based on grape varieties such as Nerello Mascalese. Local wineries offer guided tours and tastings, allowing visitors to discover the winemaking process and appreciate the unique flavours of Etna wines.

Traditional dishes

  • La Siciliana: A fried pizza stuffed with tuma (local cheese), anchovies and black olives, then fried in lard. This speciality was created in 1924 thanks to Donna Peppina, a local pastry chef.
  • Mushroom pasta: The surrounding forests offer a variety of wild mushrooms, used in many local pasta dishes. Restaurants such as Hosteria IL Porcino are renowned for their mushroom-based specialities.
  • Caponata: typical of the Catania region, a dish of aubergines simmered with capers, olives and balsamic vinegar.

Festivals and traditions

The Festival of the Madonna of Providence, celebrated every year in August, is the most important religious and folk event in Zafferana Etnea. It pays tribute to the village’s patron saint with processions, concerts and fireworks.

In October, the village hosts the Ottobrata Zafferanese, a food festival held every Sunday of the month. This festival showcases local products such as honey, mushrooms, chestnuts, grapes, apples, preserves, sweets and hot dishes prepared according to tradition.
