About 15 km south of Termini Imerese, a winding road climbs to the village of Caccamo, which preserves medieval remains and whose rocky crag has been fortified since antiquity.
It is dominated by its large and superb medieval fortress, enjoying a commanding position over the valley.
Caccamo Castle
The feudal castle of Caccamo was built in the 12th century by a Norman knight, Matthew Bonnel, on an ancient Arab fortress. It was modified later, notably by the Chiaramonte.
Matthew Bonnel distinguished himself in history for having supported a failed conspiracy against King William I of Sicily, after which he ended his life, his eyes gouged out, in the prisons of Palermo.
The castle of grey stone, recently restored, retains its medieval appearance, with its beautiful towers and ramparts. It can be visited on certain weekdays.
Visiting Caccamo
In Caccamo, one can also visit the Church of Saint George, dating back to the 11th century, partly rebuilt in the 16th century, or the Church of the Annunciation.
It is worth knowing that a 13th-century bridge has been submerged since 1994 by the waters of the artificial lake and which spans the San Leonardo river.
