Siculiana is a pretty little village 20 km west of Agrigento, set on a promontory overlooking the coastal plain and the Mediterranean Sea.
Its origins combine traces of ancient settlement (necropolises and Roman remains along the coast) and above all a medieval evolution marked by the presence of an important fort, which became the current Chiaramonte Castle, rebuilt in the 14th century.
This pleasant small town has an interesting heritage, including its religious architecture embodied in the Church of Santissimo Crocifisso, its palaces, and the local museum of the area’s industrial and maritime memory (MeTe). In addition, the nearby coastline is attractive, including Siculiana Marina with several beautiful sandy beaches, and with the immediate proximity of the Torre Salsa nature reserve.
It is an interesting base for discovering the Agrigento area, whose tourist numbers remain moderate.
What to see or do in Siculiana: main buildings and places
Chiaramonte Castle: the main monument
The Castle of Siculiana occupies the tip of a rocky promontory at about 85 m above sea level, dominating the valley and the coast, resting on rocky walls that drop sheer, characteristics that long earned it the description of impregnable.
Under Muslim rule, there was a fort (called “Rahl” or “Kalat Sugul”), destroyed by the Normans following the retaking of Agrigento on 25 July 1087, and which remained abandoned until the Chiaramonte family obtained the barony of Siculiana after the War of the Vespers (following the Peace of Caltabellotta, 1302). They rebuilt it and the castle was completed in 1310, taking on its defensive and administrative function, with a single access via a drawbridge cut into the rock. It is documented as a venue for noble events, notably the marriage of Costanza Chiaramonte to Brancaleone Doria in 1311.
On the parade ground there is a medieval cistern, still intact, collecting rainwater. The interior preserves service areas, the chapel dedicated to San Lorenzo and sections that were used as prisons at various times.
Chiesa del Santissimo Crocifisso (Mother Church)
This baroque parish church preserves the “Black Christ”, a wooden crucifix statue dating from the 17th century or earlier, patron of the municipality.
The building was constructed at the end of the 16th century, with a baroque facade in three orders, the last of which is unfinished, with a main portal framed by columns with Ionic capitals.
The interior consists of a single nave crowned by a dome on an octagonal drum, light and spaciousness.
The black wooden Crucifix is in the apse, along with a main altar and a wooden choir, dating from the end of the 18th century, decorated with coloured marbles with wooden presentations of biblical scenes.
An interesting and rare baptistery has a baptismal basin of Jewish origin, called a “Kyor”, decorated with heraldic coats of arms and alabaster motifs illustrating episodes from the Old Testament.
MeTe: Museum of Memory and the Territory
The Museum of Memory and the Territory (Museo della Memoria e del Territorio) is devoted to the rural and maritime memory of the area: panels and objects document the economy of the tonnara (tuna fishing), gypsum production, and traditional trades and the memory of the wars.
Other places in the historic centre
The historic centre is designed as a route, passing through narrow streets and beautiful viewpoints.
Siculiana Marina
The pretty beach of Siculiana Marina is 4 km from the village, a beautiful stretch of sand and small cliffs.

Traditions and gastronomy in Siculiana
In Siculiana, the feast of the Festa del Santissimo Crocifisso is held around 3 May, celebrating its “Black Christ”.
At the end of October, the Maidda Fest in Siculiana is a contemporary festival dedicated to promoting ancient grains and local agricultural products. It combines exhibitions, cookery workshops, tastings and guided tours, while highlighting the rural and gastronomic heritage of the municipality.
The territory of Siculiana is based on traditional Mediterranean agriculture, between sea and land, centred on olive groves, vineyards and cereal crops. The limestone soils and dry climate favour the production of extra virgin olive oil and quality local wines (grape varieties Nero d’Avola, Grillo and Catarratto), without specific appellation, apart from designations such as Provincia di Agrigento or Sicilia Sud-Ovest.
Among the emblematic dishes is the Minestra ‘I Sicci, a cuttlefish soup, typical of Siculiana Marina, prepared with fresh cuttlefish, peas, potatoes and wild fennel.
There is also the local focaccia, known as “cudduruni”.
