Gastronomic specialities in Agrigento

The gastronomy of Agrigento revolves mainly around seafood, with original recipes such as spaghetti with prawns and pistachios, or pasta with sardines.
Inland, sweet-and-sour rabbit is also traditionally enjoyed.

Typical desserts are based on almonds and honey, flavoured with lemon and vanilla (cubaita).
One of the local specialities is pecorino ice cream, made with sheep’s milk ricotta.

Fish is of course cooked throughout the province, including sole, a speciality of Sciacca, and cuttlefish with the cuttlefish soup of Siculiana Marina.

Festivals and traditions in Agrigento

The festival of the almond blossom was created in 1934 by Count Alfonso Gaetani of Naro, originally to promote the typical products of Agrigento. This event celebrates spring, marked by the flowering of the almond trees.
Over time it has become part of the International Folklore Festival, at the end of February or beginning of March, lasting around ten days, with a rich calendar of events, associated with the Festival of the Children of the World, and with historical parades, featuring traditional Sicilian carts and brass bands, a historical train, and numerous exhibitions and tastings of almond-based products.

Around the first Sunday of July, a week of celebrations is dedicated to the city’s patron saint, Saint Calogero.
