The Sicani Mountains are a mountain range in the hinterland of western Sicily, straddling the provinces of Palermo and Agrigento, which had a natural park created in 2010 whose status was revoked in 2018. There are several nature reserves: that of Palazzo Adriano and the Sosio Valley, that of Monte Carcaci, that of Monte Genuardo and Santa Maria del Bosco, and that of Monte Cammarata.
This pleasant region is dotted with historic villages and natural sites suitable for all kinds of excursions, from hiking on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike.
Historical heritage and local produce
Evidence of the long history of the territory of the Sicani Mountains can be found almost everywhere, such as the medieval castle of Bivona from the 13th century, the Bourbon castle from the late 15th century of Palazzo Adriano, the castle of Frederick II in Giuliana, the medieval centre of Prizzi, the villages of Arab origin of Burgio, Cammarata and Contessa Entellina, the historic fountains of Castronovo di Sicilia, the 16th-century churches and monasteries such as in Chiusa Sclafani, the 16th-century church of San Giovanni Gemini, the archaeological sites of Sambuca di Sicilia, or even places of pilgrimage such as the hermitage of Santa Rosalia in Santo Stefano di Quisquina.
The region is also rich in gastronomic and wine heritage, with pastures and the continued production of traditional cheeses, from sheep’s milk (pecorino Sicilian), and cow’s milk (caciotte, caciocavallo), local meats from small farms, fruits and vegetables and local wines.
