Presentation and visit
The Oratory of the Rosary of Santa Cita is one of the most famous Baroque sites in Palermo, with its ornamental richness. It was founded in 1590 by the Company of the Rosary, then transformed between 1673 and 1686.
It reflected the wealth and status of the members of the company, with a commission in 1695 to the great Roman painter, Carlo Maratta, for the canvas of the Madonna of the Rosary, ebony seats inlaid with mother-of-pearl, and above all the host of stuccoes by Giacomo Serpotta who created one of his major works there. Among these sculptures, the two magnificent statues of Esther and Judith stand out at the foot of the triumphal arch, and on the counter-façade the great drapery supported by a host of cherubs, in the center of which is depicted the Battle of Lepanto (victory of the Christians over the Turks).
All around is present a cycle representing the Mysteries of the Rosary.
