The charming Piazza Bellini is one of the most charming places in Palermo, very close to the Piazza Pretoria in the Kalsa district, a nodal point of the medieval historic centre, located at the intersection of Via Maqueda (created in the 16th century) and several historic urban axes.
Buildings around the square
Two important churches stand there, dating back to the time of the Norman Kingdom of Sicily, Santa Maria dell’Ammiraglio, more commonly called “La Martorana”, and that of San Cataldo. With their characteristic Arab-Norman architecture, they are part of the UNESCO inscription concerning “Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedrals of Cefalù and Monreale”. They illustrate the stylistic hybridization that marked Palermo in the 12th century.
On the other side of the square rise the Baroque church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria (Santa Caterina d’Alessandria), the Teatro Bellini and the rear facade of the Palazzo Pretorio. Santa Caterina d’Alessandria, although Baroque in its interior decoration, was built from the 16th century within a vast Dominican monastery.
The Teatro Bellini, initially a 17th-century theatrical establishment known under various names, was renamed in honour of the composer Vincenzo Bellini in the 19th century; it is one of the oldest theatres still present in the historic centre.
On the adjacent square of the Largo dei Cavalieri del Santo Sepolcro, preceding Via Maqueda, remains of the Punic or Phoenician walls are also visible.
